Possessor of Brisingamen and lady of Fólkvangr, she receives a share of those who fall in battle. Vanadís means “the dís of the Vanir.” She is Freyr’s sister and Njörd’s daughter. Her shadow runs throughout the entire novel: through Brisingamen, the lineage of Max and Eline, and the ancient force that still breathes within Vanir blood. Her erotic power should not necessarily be understood as promiscuity in a moralizing sense, but rather as a manifestation of sovereignty, fertility, and divine freedom. Some sources accuse her of scandalous sexual behavior, particularly in satirical contexts such as Lokasenna, in which Loki accuses nearly every god and goddess of something shameful. However, those accusations belong to a tradition of ritual insult and to later interpretations shaped by Christian values. Freyr: Vanir god of fertility, peace, abundance, prosperity, and sacred kingship. Brother of Freyja and son of Njörd. He possesses the ship Skíðblaðnir and the golden boar Gullinbursti. Njörd / Njord: Vanir god of the sea, winds, navigation, wealth, and prosperity. Father of Freyr and Freyja. He is associated with sea voyages, harbors, fishing, and offerings made to the sea. Kvasir: A being born from the peace between the Æsir and the Vanir, created from the saliva of both clans. The Mead of Poetry was made from his blood. He represents wisdom born from union and knowledge transformed into an object of greed. Nerthus: Germanic goddess of the earth, fertility, and ritual peace. Her worship is associated with sacred land, agricultural cycles, and the divine presence carried in procession. Hnoss: Daughter of Freyja. Her name is associated with that which is precious, beautiful, and valuable. Gersemi: Daughter of Freyja. Her name is likewise connected to the idea of treasure, a jewel, or something precious. Óðr / Od: Husband of Freyja. A mysterious figure who disappears or travels far away. Freyja weeps tears of red gold for him.
