Sylvae

A standalone story within The Memory Beneath the Water.

Published · Available in English, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese · German edition coming soon

Eldermere is an isolated village where winter seems to last longer than anywhere else.

Rufus has grown up amid poverty, labour and family silences, with an inexplicable gift for music and for easing ailments that others cannot treat. His life changes when he meets Sylvae beside the frozen lake.

She always appears near water. No one knows where she comes from. Rufus does not ask too many questions.

Their relationship becomes the secret centre of his life while Eldermere reveals names no longer spoken, ancient disappearances and memories that survive where they should have been lost.

When tragedy forces Rufus to leave the village and enter Brandelor's circles of power, he discovers that superstition may have deeper roots—and some promises endure after everyone has forgotten making them.

What readers are saying

★★★★★

“A beautiful and cruel love story, wrapped in a mythology that feels far older than the characters themselves. By the end, the lake has become a character in its own right.”

— Valentina Mas

★★★★★

“Rufus won me over precisely because he’s so far from being the perfect hero. He makes mistakes, longs for what he ought to fear, and keeps going when any sensible person would have run.”

— Elena Ionescu

★★★★★

“I thought it was going to be a fairly traditional fantasy story, but I was surprised by how attached I became to the characters. I felt so sorry for Colette, and Peter made me laugh more than once. By the end, I wanted to know what was going to happen to all of them, not just Rufus and Sylvae.”

— Asun Coves
